An International computer security firm has discovered that popular social news site Digg is being exploited by cybercriminals.

According to PandaLabs, crooks are posing as Digg users and focusing on the site’s celebrity news forums. By all outward appearances, the fake accounts appear legitimate and this is what causes people to click the links that are posted using the fake accounts. Under the auspices of viewing celebrity sex tapes and the like, unwitting users click the link and then are prompted to download and install software in order to view the tawdry video clips. Of course, instead of getting any software to view video the user instead gets a fake diagnostic program.

The fake diagnostic program in turn pretends to scan the user’s hard drive for supposed malware (oh, the irony), finds the “infected” files and offers up a digital solution for a price (it would be something if the program actually uninstalled itself after payment was affected, but this seems unlikely).

Scamming people with a fake Norton-type security scan is one thing, but the real insidiousness of this malware lies in the fact that it hinders the computer’s normal functioning to make the diagnostic more convincing. No word yet on how many people thought they were going to see Paris Hilton’s latest hijinks only to find their CPU underperforming and a “helpful” little program offering to fix the problem.

Digg has already begun identifying and shutting down the fake profiles. “We are fully aware of the issue at hand and have already taken action,” Jen Burton, Digg’s community manager, said. “Malware accounts reported to us by the community are terminated immediately and all content is removed.” According to Burton, Digg has erased more than 300 suspected malware-spreading accounts.

A security camera located in the back of a bar caught the man’s face when he removed his balaclava, ostensibly because it was very hot in the small room where the safe he was attempting to crack was located.

Barack Obama was elected as the 44th President of the United States this week, and a large part of his platform was centered on the notion of change. Wasting no time, and aiming to be the first true Internet President, Barack Obama launched the official website for his transition to the White House. On Thursday www.change.gov, went online with an invitation for users to offer their ideas for the future of the country. The website further entreats readers to “Share Your Vision” via email.

There’s a countdown to the inauguration on the site, noting the number of days until January 20, 2009 when Obama will be sworn in. In terms of media, there is a blog posting that displays a YouTube video of Obama’s Tuesday victory speech in Chicago.

A quote from Obama is featured on the page, reading: “Today we begin in earnest the work of making sure that the world we leave our children is just a little bit better than the one we inhabit today.” More to the point during this time of economic woe, users can apply for jobs via the website. The site is pretty straightforward, but the degree to which Obama has attempted, with success, to harness and embrace the Internet during his campaign, and now during his transition to the White House, is impressive.

Host Henry Dittman was a pleasure to work with and Reputation.com would also like to thank the hard working Smart Show crew who came by to film our staff.

Working in the Online Reputation Management Industry is truly exciting. The fact that media and individuals are increasingly interested in our growing field makes my job at Reputation.com incredibly rewarding. RD is the second segment in this video and in the intro, you can catch a glimpse of our office (complete with Foosball Table).

Reputation.com is the market leader in Online Identity Solutions. The video below highlights MyEdge, which helps people control their Google results for as little as $99, but Reputation.com also offers MyReputation, MyChild and MyPrivacy to help people and companies effectively manage their online presence. Reputation.com lets individuals and brands proactively protect their reputation on the internet. Businesses especially can benefit from the Business Insurance for the Internet TM that Reputation.com provides.

Following the historic election of Barack Obama, the postmortem for the McCain campaign can officially begin. As Washington insiders and Republican pundits look to see where they can improve in the coming years, people will point to different aspects of the McCain campaign and analyze it endlessly.

We’ve run some internal polling data through the series of tubes and think that this single moment was when McCain lost the election. It was not after the polls closed in California last night. It was when he decided to get extra dramatic during the debates.
