First Look at Latest Facebook Redesign

Just after Christmas, GigaOm released two screenshots purported to be Facebook’s new redesign. Today, TechCrunch confirmed that the design was in fact already rolling out to select users. To get a peek at what your Facebook profile will soon look like, check out the image below.

Typically, Facebook users scream bloody murder when the site undergoes a design change, but these changes actually seem fairly intuitive. For one thing, by removing duplicate links to your profile, the new layout looks very clean. Furthermore, by relocating the search bar to become a central component of the user interface, Facebook is encouraging users to search the site more often which is in keeping with recent moves to open up the site to greater search visibility.

One point of concern, however, is that the settings tab has been merged into a general account tab. While this makes for a cleaner looking profile, given the fact that most users are just now learning how to adjust their privacy settings after Facebook’s ill-received recent changes, it may be too soon to spring a change that obscures access to privacy controls. Of course, this problem could be mitigated somewhat with the right notice from Facebook.

As the Facebook redesign continues to roll out to the general public in the coming weeks, we will provide a more detailed analysis of how to navigate the site and effectively manage your Facebook account.
